Tata Indica XL, the upcoming extended hatchback from the home grown auto major has been spotted undisguised. The stretched Indica looks like a bootless Tata Indigo XL and expected to hit Tata dealerships by mid of this year. The vehicle spotted here is a no frill hatchback with some additional luggage space and leg room compared to Tata Indica hatchbacks.
Under the hood, Tata Motors will plant a 1.4ltr engine which is known for class leading fuel efficiency. The engine returns an extra ordinary fuel economy of 25kmpl with decent power. The engine develops 70bhp power at 4000 RPM and peak torque of 140Nm at 1800 RPM. The engine will be mated to Tata Indica’s five speed gear box.
At the moment, there is no solid information about the seating structure of Tata Indica XL. There are reports suggesting that the Indica XL will be a three row hatchback. But we feel that Indica XL will be launched as a five seater hatchback with extra space for rear benchers. Another important task for the company is positioning of Tata Indica XL in the existing portfolio. Tata Motor’s passenger car segment starts from Tata Nano and Tata Manza Club Class. We foresee Indica XL could be positioned between current Tata Indica and Tata Indigo CS.
Though the Indica was launched as a hatchback for personal use, a major chunk of the sales comes from taxi operators. The popularity of Indica among fleet operators further hampered it’s prospects among personal use segment. We fee company has now decided to leverage the strength of this product further by adding more rear leg room and luggage space.
Tata Motors is in the process of product revamping and we think the company will regain the lost position in Indian passenger car market in coming years. Stay tuned to Wheelosphere for more updates.
