Yamaha Ray Scooter unveiled in India

Yamaha Motor India today unveiled their first scooter offering, Ray in Indian market. Yamaha Ray Scooter was previewed during this year’s New Delhi Auto Expo. Company has roped in Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone to promote Ray. Company is yet to announce the price of Ray. The commercial launch of Yamaha Ray will happen by third quarter of this year. Yamaha Ray is expected to attract young girls (to be more precise 16-24 years) who are in search for a set of trendy wheels.

Yamaha Motors has made significant  investments in their Indian operations. Company has already made huge investments in tune 750Crores in their plants in Faridabad and Surajpur. Yamaha’s third Indian plant is being constructed near Chennai. After commissioning of their third plant, Yamaha will have combined production capacity 2.5millions.

According to Yamaha, the Indian scooter market witnessed growth in tune of 25% while motorcycle segment recorded 10%. Naturally scooter segment is more attractive to two wheeler  manufacturers present in Indian market.

Indian scooter market is currently ruled by products from Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India. Yamaha Motors will have to face heat from their Japanese counterpart.

“We expect a quarter of our overall sales to come from the scooter segment by December 2013,” said Hiroyuki Suzuki, MD and CEO, India Yamaha Motor. Though the target is ambitious, we doubt it is an easy one to achieve. Anyways let us wait and see, what is in store for Yamaha Ray scooter in Indian market.
